How to Buy a Laptop You'll Still Like in Year Five
Laptops are bought on numbers and lived with as objects. The specification sheet decides most purchases, yet the qualities that determine daily satisfaction โ screen, keyboard, thermals, build โ are exactly the ones the sheet describes worst. A good buying process weights both, in that order of neglect.
Start from workload, not from specs
Three questions eliminate most of the market. What will this machine actually run โ browser and documents, photo and video work, development environments, games? Where will it live โ a desk, a bag, a lap? And how many years should it last? A browser-and-documents machine bought to flagship specification is money converted into heat; a video-editing machine bought thin and light is a thermal-throttling lesson scheduled for month two.
For longevity, memory is the spec that ages best โ and it is now frequently soldered. Buy the capacity for year five, not year one: 16 GB is the sensible floor for a general-purpose machine expected to last, 8 GB is a two-year decision wearing a discount.
The screen and keyboard are the actual product
You will look at the display every minute of ownership. Brightness (measured in nits) decides usability near windows โ 250 is dim, 300 is workable, 400+ is comfortable. Colour coverage (sRGB percentage) decides whether photos look right. Both are exactly the numbers budget listings omit, an omission that is itself information, as we argued in how to read a spec sheet. The keyboard and trackpad, meanwhile, are described by no specification at all โ which is the strongest argument for a genuine returns window and an evening of real typing.
A worked example
Two โฌ749 machines. Model A: newest-generation processor, 16 GB, 512 GB, "up to 12 hours", panel unspecified. Model B: last-generation processor a tier down, 16 GB, 512 GB, 350-nit 100% sRGB panel, 65 Wh battery, USB-C charging, publicly listed replacement parts. For a documents-and-browser life, the CPU gap is invisible and the panel gap is permanent: Model B is better every single day. For sustained compilation or export workloads, the calculus can flip โ which is the entire point: the workload decides, and the sheet only helps once you know what to ask of it. Reviews then confirm the two things no sheet states: fan noise under load, and whether the battery claim survives real brightness.
Read the ports and the wattage
Two identical USB-C ports can differ in data rate, display output and charging capability; the connector shape tells you nothing. Check what the machine charges at โ an undersized adapter charges slowly and some machines throttle on it โ and whether it charges over standard USB-C at all, which by 2026 it should. Battery claims are measured dim and idle; halve them for planning, then let a measured review refine the estimate.
Timing and the refurbished question
Laptop lines refresh annually, and the outgoing generation discounts hard just before and after the new one lands โ usually the best value moment, since year-over-year gains are incremental. The other strong play is manufacturer- or fleet-refurbished business laptops: built for durability, abundant, warrantied, and routinely the best build quality per euro in computing. The grading and verification rules are the standard ones from refurbished vs new โ battery health disclosed, warranty length checked, everything exercised inside the returns window. And whichever route you take, the purchase-timing tools apply as usual: a price alert set at the model's floor does the waiting for you.
FAQ
Is a newer processor generation worth paying for? For light workloads, almost never โ recent generations are all overqualified for documents and browsing. For sustained heavy work, the gains are real but usually smaller than the gap between cooling designs. Reviews that measure sustained (not burst) performance settle it.
How much storage do I actually need? 512 GB is the comfortable general-purpose floor; 256 GB works with cloud-heavy habits but fills fast. Check upgradeability before buying โ some machines take a second drive for the cost of a screwdriver, others are sealed.
Gaming-branded laptops for ordinary work โ good value? Sometimes: strong cooling and ports at aggressive prices. The costs are weight, battery life and often a dim panel โ fine on a desk, poor in a bag. The workload question answers it, as always.

Small Appliances: Separating Machines from Marketing
Wattage is marketing; mechanisms are engineering. What predicts satisfaction is consumables cost, spare parts and the boring failure points.

How to Read a Spec Sheet
A specification sheet is a marketing document that happens to contain facts. Knowing which numbers carry information is most of the skill.
